Education advocates are worried about the furlough of federal staff supporting special education

Concerns Over Furlough of Federal Special Education Staff

Education advocates in Maine are worried about the Trump administration's decision to furlough support staff in the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP).

Carrie Woodcock, executive director at the Maine Parent Federation, stated that OSEP's primary job is to ensure children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education.

"They were providing technical assistance and corrective action planning for the state of Maine to not only be able to keep our federal funding, but also to move us towards compliance,"

said Woodcock, highlighting the importance of OSEP's oversight and support.

Without this support, special education students may not receive adequate assistance, according to Woodcock.

The Maine community relies on public support to maintain vital services, including public media.
