Three major labor unions have sued the federal government to stop a social media surveillance program designed to revoke visas and green cards of immigrants with "hostile attitudes" about the government.
The program has suppressed free speech, including targeting graduate students with pro-Palestine views, the lawsuit claims.
The First Amendment applies to everyone who lives in the U.S.
The lawsuit, filed by three civil liberties groups, is the first to challenge the surveillance program itself, according to Lisa Femia, a lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
