Medical oncologist Dr. Heather Parsons, MD, MPH, has joined Fred Hutch Cancer Center as program head of the Breast Oncology Program.
Dr. Parsons' motivation to specialize in oncology stems from her personal experience. Her younger sister was diagnosed with lymphoma as a young adult, and later with melanoma in childhood.
She witnessed how cancer affects the entire family, shaping her understanding of what patients and their loved ones endure during treatment.
Parsons' sister is now thriving, but the challenging time her family faced during the diagnosis and treatment period remains a vivid memory. This experience drove her desire to improve the experience for patients and their families, leading her to focus on breast cancer treatment and research.
As program head, Dr. Parsons will utilize her expertise to advance breast cancer initiatives at Fred Hutch.
