Community members speak out as Verndale city council grapples with law enforcement options.
Over 50 members of the Verndale community gathered at the fire hall on Monday, Oct. 13, for a public hearing to voice their concerns about whether or not to maintain the city's local police department or contract with the Wadena County Sheriff's Office.
Currently, Verndale police chief Randy Athmann serves the entire city, with a population of roughly 500, working part-time at 35.5 hours a week, assisted by three additional part-time officers.
“We try to be pretty conservative with our budget,”
said Mayor Tara Erckenbrack, explaining that the city council makes annual budget decisions based on what's best for the city's future.
