Government Completes Assessment of Sydney-Newcastle High-Speed Rail Business Case

The federal government has completed the assessment of the business case for the Sydney-Newcastle High-Speed Rail project.

The project's business case was under review by Infrastructure Australia since last December. The estimated cost of building Stage 1 (Sydney to Newcastle) is between $30 billion to $40 billion, according to industry experts.

"I don't want to mislead the Senate or the estimates hearing, and the range and the cost is dependent on the government's decision,"

said High Speed Rail Authority chief executive Tim Parker, declining to comment on costs during a Senate estimates hearing.

The government has confirmed its commitment to progressing the project. Author's summary: Sydney-Newcastle high-speed rail project moves forward.
