Albany Catholic Diocese to Pay $8M to Settle Sex Abuse Claim
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany has agreed to pay $8 million to settle a case of sexual abuse committed by one of its former priests.
The lawsuit, which was scheduled to go to trial, alleged that the victim was abused by Father Edward Charles Pratt from the age of 11 to 16.
The victim filed a lawsuit against the diocese in 2020, after New York State's Child Victims Act removed time limitations on old sexual abuse claims.
The law firm representing the victim said this settlement is a sign of how strong the diocese believes the case is against them.
The settlement comes as a result of the diocese's acknowledgement of the case's strength.
