Search for Remains of Disappeared Dissidents in Brazilian Cemetery
The Brazilian government has initiated a search in a cemetery for the remains of political dissidents who disappeared during the country's former military dictatorship.
According to the Human Rights Office of the Brazilian presidency, approximately 10 dissidents who vanished during the military's rule from 1964 to 1985 may be buried in Sao Paulo's Vila Formosa cemetery.
- Over 450 people were killed or disappeared during this period.
- The search began after authorities discovered that several dissidents who disappeared after being arrested had been buried clandestinely in the cemetery.
Among those believed to be buried there is Virgilio Gomes da Silva, who was killed after being arrested for leading the 1969 kidnapping of a former U.S. official.
