Military strikes on boats off the coast of Venezuela have killed nearly 30 people.

According to President Donald Trump, each strike also saved 25,000 lives.

The Trump administration has provided no evidence about the type or quantity of drugs it says were on five boats the U.S. military struck off the coast of Venezuela.

From May 2024 to April 2025, 73,000 people died in the U.S. If Trump’s statement were accurate, five boat strikes would have saved nearly double the number of lives that were lost to overdoses in a year.

Drug experts have told PolitiFact that even if the type and quantity of drugs on the boats were known, the amount of drugs stopped from entering the U.S. doesn’t indicate how many lives were saved.
