Philips, a multinational digital tech company, has lost a two-decade legal battle in the Delhi High Court over patent infringement related to Video Compact Discs (VCDs).
The case, Koninklijke Philips NV v., was decided on October 13, with Justice Mini Pushkarna ruling that Philips failed to prove infringement of its 'Digital Transmission System' patent by a Delhi-based shop.
The Court found that the process adopted by Philips to compare its patented process with that of the Indian shop's CD products was fundamentally flawed.
The patent held by Philips concerned three elements: a transmitter, a receiver, and a transmission medium. The court's decision brings an end to the 21-year-old case.
