Maine is experiencing a severe drought, with minimal rainfall and hundreds of wells running dry.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection requires companies with significant groundwater wells to monitor water levels and reduce or halt pumping if levels drop too low.
The DEP says it’s currently not aware of any water bottling operations that have been required to reduce or stop withdrawals during this drought.
However, Poland Spring has taken measures to reduce its water pumping, implementing a "significant" reduction in withdrawals at its Clear Spring site in Hollis and other locations across Maine as of September 1.
