Online Sales and Native Artists

Online sales are transforming the market for Native artists, but counterfeit products may pose a threat to their work.

Marlo Kiyite, a Native artist, began carving at 19, when she and her husband Fitz moved to Gallup, New Mexico. Her cousin, a well-known carver, introduced her to the craft of creating pocket-sized animals, known as fetishes.

"I said, 'Hey, anything at this point,'" Kiyite remembered. "So I started carving."

Kiyite learned to cut, clean, and decorate the figures, which are believed to carry the spirit of the animals they represent, offering protection and strength. Over 40 years, she and Fitz developed their unique style of stone fetishes.
