Whirlpool responds to ADEQ issues with Fort Smith pollution-mitigation efforts - Talk Business & Politics

Whirlpool's Response to ADEQ's Concerns

Whirlpool has agreed to some of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) requests to monitor and mitigate cancer-causing pollutants around the former Whirlpool Fort Smith plant.

The plant, which closed in June 2012, was found to have leaked trichloroethylene (TCE), a cancer-causing chemical, into surrounding properties.

According to reports, Whirlpool officials admitted to the leak in 2013, after public pressure. The company has since hired Ramboll, a Denmark-based firm, to monitor pollution and provide remediation plans to the ADEQ.

The former plant site spans 153 acres and is located at 6400 Jenny Lind Road.

Whirlpool has agreed to do more to monitor and mitigate cancer-causing pollutants around the former Whirlpool Fort Smith plant.
